How it works

Type or paste text into the box and every count updates instantly. Characters are counted the way people see them, so an emoji or a Hindi conjunct counts as one character. "Characters (no spaces)" ignores spaces, tabs and line breaks. Reading time is based on about 200 words per minute and speaking time on about 130 words per minute. Everything is calculated locally in your browser -- nothing you type is uploaded or saved.

Is my text sent to any server?

No. The word counter runs entirely in your browser. The text you type or paste is never uploaded, stored, or included in analytics. We do not require sign-up or login.

How are words counted?

A word is any run of letters or numbers, including words joined by an apostrophe or hyphen (so "it's" and "well-known" each count as one word). Punctuation, symbols and emoji on their own are not counted as words. Hindi and other scripts are supported.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of about 200 words per minute, and speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute -- a typical pace for a talk or presentation. Actual times vary from person to person.

What counts as a sentence, paragraph and line?

Sentences end with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or Devanagari danda. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by at least one blank line. Lines count every line break, including empty lines.
